Expectations
of a science course in the upper primary stage
All the
upper primary level the child sees science as a subject for the first time.
Science at this stage gradually transitions from the study of the environment
to the primary element to the basic element of science and technology. This
stage should be chosen to teach science concept that help in understanding
everyday life. Experiments and activities should become essential components of
the learning teaching process.
The concept
of science in the upper primary stage should not be driven by a disciplined
approach. At this stage science should be taught as an integrated subject. The
child should be taught the principles of science through know experiences as
well as through simple activities, through simple and industrial models. Care
should be taken to learn more about the environment and health, including
reproductive and sexual health. The scientific concept comes mainly from
observations, activities, experiments and surveys. Group activities,
discussions with colleagues, teachers and community members, surveys,
retrieving and managing information, organizing school exhibitions etc. are
important part of science education.
In addition
to simple experiments and experience, an important process of science education
at this stage is to engage the student in meaningful investigation, especially
to those who consider the problem to be important and significant. This task
may include discussions with the teacher in the classroom, discussion with the
classmate, gathering information from the newspaper, discussing with a
knowledgeable person, gathering information from easily available research and
conducting simple investigations in which the student is to play an important
role.
