SCHOOL SAFETY

SCHOOL SAFETY

Children have the right to live with dignity and access to education in a safe, protective, growth and development environment. School safety and security should be viewed from a broader perspective and is not limited to structural and physical safety. The issue of school safety has become more complex, going beyond corporal punishment to bullying, physical violence, sexual, mental and emotional violence. It also causes death in extremely serious matters. There have been reports of violence and horrific incidents in schools in the recent past, as well as incidents such as murders, ambushes and rapes.

The ease of access to the internet has led to an increase in the number of videos depicting violence, crime and drug abuse. Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs are easily obtained. At the same time children are experiencing stress due to exams. Pressure from parents, teachers and peer groups and the stress of exams lead children to violence and aggression.

It is a matter of concern that school principles, teachers and the system are generally sad. This reflects the need for the school to be included in the framework for safety and security. A comprehensive, accountable, including guide has been development. In which all stakeholders like management committee, teachers, students, parents and mentors are being consulted to make the school safe and secure.

As an ideal situation every school can be given a counselor but the situation is a question of lack of trained counselors. Which can not be made available at present. In that situation school teachers can be given this responsibility.
